POSITION TITLE: Upward Bound, Summer Instructor, English Language Arts STATUS: Contract STANDARD HOURS: 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., three days/week, Monday through Thursday REPORTS TO: Upward Bound Manager ASSIGNED TO: Upward Bound Program

Position Summary:
As part of the Upward Bound Summer Program team, the English Language Arts instructor plans and teaches
ELA classes according to Shaw High School’s English Language Arts curriculum three days per week,
between Monday and Thursday for the duration of the six-week summer program. The goal of the summer
program is to help advance the academic and personal development of rising 10th through 12th grader
students with varying needs.

Essential Functions:
*Create lessons for three different 50 minute English Language Arts classes three days per week,
which equals 18 days of instruction.  Lessons should have clear learning objectives, activities and assessments. 
*Teach lessons three days per week between Monday and Thursday from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.
*Attend a 3-hour staff training session before the start of the summer program (June date TBD).
*Attend a 2-hour all staff orientation session before the start of the summer program (June date TBD).
*Meet one hour weekly during the summer program with lead instructor for evaluation of lessons,
student progress and grading processes.
*Submit a mid-term progress report and final course grades for students by established due dates.
*Provide overall mentorship to students and serve as a role model in all tasks and interactions.
*Attend the Summer Program graduation luncheon (end of July) for participants and their families.

Preferred Qualifications:

*MA or MS in English or related field.
*Ohio Teacher certification.
*Two years’ experience teaching English Language Arts at the high school level.
*Experience in developing an English Language Arts curriculum that addresses the individual needs
of students and non-traditional methods.
*Experience in providing educational services to low income and first-generation college students.
*TRiO program alumnus and/or experience working with TRiO youth.
