Challenging and varied workload Inner City municipality Home to one of the new Central Activity Districts forming the basis of Melbourne's urban growth strategy as we move towards 5 million, this inner City municipality is currently undergoing significant regeneration and renewal and will be the focus of substantial employment growth, transport upgrades, redevelopment and public investment in the coming years. A challenging position has recently opened up at Council within the strategic planning unit for a fixed term of 6 months, with the possibility of becoming a permanent position later in the year.

Position Objectives

   » Conduct research, investigation and analysis into land use planning issues
   » Assist in developing policies and implementation plans that support Council's Municipal Strategic Statement (MSS) and planning scheme amendments in accordance with Council and statutory requirements
   » Coordinate and prepare planning scheme amendments in accordance with Council and statutory requirements
   » Implement key MSS and Melbourne 2030 policies, studies and agreed action plans
   » Provide technical and administrative support to inter-agency and Council project teams
   » Assist in the identification and review of strategic land use planning directions and priorities within the municipality

To be considered for this opportunity, candidates are expected to demonstrate the following skills and experience:

   » Relevant tertiary qualification in town planning or similar
   » Several years experience as a town planner with local government or private industry with a sound understanding of the statutory and operational requirements of local government
   » A thorough understanding of the Victorian planning legislation framework, the Victorian Planning Provisions, planning schemes and the requirements of the ResCode and the Planning and Environment Act 1987
   » A thorough understanding of Melbourne Metropolitan Strategy 2030 and its implications for the municipality
   » An understanding of urban design principles and ecologically sustainable development principles
   » A high level ability to interpret and assess the merits of development proposals including plans
   » Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Word, Lotus Notes, Excel, Powerpoint, and GIS (eg MapInfo)
   » A well developed customer service ethic and strong commitment to improving service delivery
   » Current Victorian Driver's Licence
