Temp rising

The majority of jobs at the moment are supplied by the public sector
Temp work is a great way to earn some cash if you’re on a working holiday visa. It’s generally easy to do and you don’t need qualifications to land a job.

“It suits somebody that wants to get some work in the UK and get a bit of experience,” says Helen Furze, director of recruiter Furze Rogers Associates.

What does it involve?

Admin temp jobs cover a broad range of roles. These include reception and switchboard work, typing, archiving, data entry, Microsoft Word and Excel tasks and telephone work, such as chasing debt or renewing subscriptions.

“You can do an awful lot but you don’t need an awful lot of experience,” says Furze. “A good office junior is normally a good all-rounder with good keyboard skills.”

Temp jobs vary in time, from just one day to several weeks or even months.

Who’s recruiting?

Admin temp jobs have dropped off in the economic downturn, especially in the private sector. The majority of jobs at the moment are supplied by the public sector in places such as hospitals, universities and councils.

What do I need to have?

“A nice clear, concise CV,” says Furze, adding that it’s important to highlight any software you have used. Being presentable is also very important. According to Furze you don’t have to spend much on work clothes, they just need to be “smart, clean and tidy.”

Quick and accurate data input, good telephone and communication skills and a flexible attitude are also essential.

How much does it pay?

These days admin temps are likely to earn between £9 and £11 an hour, but some firms pay a bit less at around £7 or £8.

While there’s no longer the abundance of temp work out there, Furze says there is work available. It can be competitive, though.

“Even for a simple admin job you’ve got to be better than the next person. That’s why you’ve got to look at your presentation and your CV, and you’ve got to perform well at interviews,” Furze points out.
