England skipper Michael Vaughan has called for his players to bounce back in the fifth and final Test at the Oval and level the series against South Africa after suffering a demoralising 191-run defeat at Headingley. Chasing an unlikely 401 for victory in the fourth innings on a rapidly deteriorating pitch, England rolled over tamely as allrounder Jacques Kallis wrapped up the match with figures of six for 54. "Over the five days, South Africa were more disciplined and played smarter cricket than we did," Vaughan said. "We were in a similar position at Lord's before bouncing back at Trent Bridge and we have to regroup and get back to doing disciplined stuff," the captain added. With South Africa in an unbeatable position at 2-1 with one to play, Vaughan realises that pride can be salvaged with victory at the Oval. The England captain, who made scores of 15 and 21 in the Test, had high praise for Gary Kirsten, who hit a match-winning 130 in the first innings and a gritty 60 on a tricky pitch in the second. "Full credit to Gary Kirsten, he was outstanding and probably the difference between the two sides." Vaughan's opposite number, Graeme Smith, was obviously overjoyed with the result and had praise for his players. "This was a fantastic team performance, the boys were hungry to do well here and it showed. The boys showed true character because England bowled well on the first day. The tail was excellent and it was a great performance from Zondeki, he definitely stood up to be counted. Smith acknowledged the hole left by Shaun Pollock but was glad that other players, most notably Andrew Hall and Kallis, could fill his shoes. "Shaun Pollock has gone home to be with his wife and child and we dedicate this win to him, it'd be nice to have Polly back at The Oval.²
