The two-time French open champion, who had started the day with a three-stroke buffer, would be the first to admit that his closing effort wasn't anything like as spectacular as his opening 8-under 63. He posted five birdies, but all nullified them with four bogies, and saw McGinley get to within one shot of his lead on the back nine before pulling away again to an 18-under winning total of 266 and a first prize of ?209,000 as his Irish rival run into trouble with a double bogey at the 16th and closed with a 71.
