Retief Goosen won his 1st tournament this year and a career 4th in France when he picked up his 2nd Trophée Lancôme at the Saint-Nom-La-Bretèche in Paris on Sunday with a closing one-under 70 that was good enough to give him victory by four shots. The two-time French open champion, who had started the day with a three-stroke buffer, would be the first to admit that his closing effort wasn't anything like as spectacular as his opening 8-under 63. He posted five birdies, but all nullified them with four bogies, and saw McGinley get to within one shot of his lead on the back nine before pulling away again to an 18-under winning total of 266 and a first prize of ?209,000 as his Irish rival run into trouble with a double bogey at the 16th and closed with a 71. Yes, 'The Goose' was not at his best, but then again the London-based South African who recently fathered a first child with his English born wife,Å might also point out that none of the most threatening chasers in the pack trying to run him down had fared any better, least off all McGinley, who carded a mixed bag of four birdies, two bogies and and a double bogey. Goosen's earnings of €295,000 have hosted the winner for the past two years of the Volvo Order of Merit into10th place on the rankings and given him an outside chance of retaining his title, even though he still trails cuirrent Merit list leader Ernie Els by £1m - but he's not really interested in gunning for it this year. To do so the 34-year-old 2001 US Open champion would have to play in the Dunhill Links championships, which carries a first prize of more than £500,000, but he has opted not to and instead will return to the American Tour where he has played the bulk of his golf this year. "It's a great event and it's nice to see them put that sort of prize money up." he explained, " but it's not a format that suits me. "Last year at Kingsbarns we played six-and-a-half-hour rounds and in that kind of weather, sitting on every tee for 20 minutes, I get stiff too quickly."
