Champion for the week

The majority of long hours employees are not paid for their extra hours.
The Trades Union Congress (TUC) is urging the UK to end its individual opt-out of Europe’s limit of a 48-hour working week.

The move comes as MEPs meet to discuss the future of Britain’s opt-out clause.

One in eight British employees regularly work more than 48 hours a week, and 460,000 are working more than a 60-hour a week.

The majority of long hours employees (2.3 million) are not paid for their extra hours.

The TUC says ending the opt-out would improve health and safety and reduce the number of victims of accidents caused by over-tired and stressed workers.
